Benjamin Whitrow was a softly-spoken, RADA-trained English actor who performed on stage from 1959. He worked for seven years in the 1960s under the direction of 劳伦斯·奥利弗 at the National Theatre. He was also a prolific actor on screen, usually seen in avuncular roles. He is probably best remembered for his BAFTA-nominated performance as Mr. Bennet in the BBC's acclaimed version of 傲慢与偏见 (1995) and he made his final appearance in 加里·奥德曼's Churchill film 至暗时刻 (2017). In his personal life, he was fond of wild orchids, golf, bridge and collecting books, and had a son, 安格斯·里, with actress 西莉亚·伊姆里.
He trained at RADA 1955 -1959 which was interrupted by having to do his national service and made his theatrical debut at the Liverpool Playhouse in 1959.
He made his West End debut in Otherwise Engaged at the Queens Theatre in 1975.
