One of the most prolific screenwriters in the action/adventure genre, Jonathan started his career writing episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992) for 乔治·卢卡斯 and ABC. He wrote 虎胆龙威3 (1995), re-conceived from his original spec script "Simon Says". He followed that with 勇敢者的游戏 (1995). His script for the 圣徒 (1997) was completely re-written by others. After this frustration, he enjoyed a long working friendship with producer 杰瑞·布鲁克海默 with whom he collaborated on many projects since 1996. He re-wrote the whole script for 勇闯夺命岛 (1996) without credit, which he tried desperately to achieve via WGA arbitration.
He did uncredited re-writes on 空中监狱 (1997) and the remake of 极速60秒 (2000) and received executive producer credits on both. 世界末日 (1998), from Jonathan's original idea, was the second time Jonathan had the highest grossing film, worldwide, at the box office. The other was 虎胆龙威3 (1995).
Jonathan's next projects are 双子杀手 (2019) for Disney and 惩罚者 (2004) for Artisan/Marvel, which he will also direct in late 2002.
In 1998, Jonathan was set to make his directorial debut with the Marvel Comics hero The Hulk, but plans for that project failed. His wife 盖尔·安妮 was the producer.

Stated in an interview that he no longer attempt to do another film based on a comic book after the experience with 惩罚者 (2004). He felt he can never please either fans of "The Punisher", who some of them thought the movie was too light, or critics who thought the movie was too dark and too violent.
Was originally slated to direct a sequel of 惩罚者 (2004) with 托马斯·简 returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher. However, due to creative differences and budget cuts made by Lionsgate, Hensleigh left the project which 托马斯·简 who leave later on for the same reason. Lionsgate then replace Hensleigh with director 莱克茜·亚历山大 and decided to reboot the film into 惩罚者2：战争特区 (2008).
He is now filming his new movie 惩罚者 (2004) for Marvel which he is writing and directing and is due for release in Summer 2004. [August 2003]
